Jameos del Agua was the first cultural centre to be created by César Manrique and opened to the public in 1966 even though work continued for a further ten years. The Jameos del Agua is situated on the coast end of a 6km volcanic tunnel which is one of the longest known in the world, the lava flow was from La Corona Volcano that sits high above Órzola and Ye. The centre is named because of the opening where the swimming pool is now situated, jameo is a guanche word for opening of the ground. From the Jameos del Agua the tunnel is known as the Túnel de la Atlántida and runs another 1.5km into the sea, this and the cave where the blind albino crabs can be seen is of great scientific interest and a new endemic species has just been found and named César.
