We’re deep into carnival season here on the island, and it’s later than normal this year, because Easter is also late.
Carnival is a big deal on the island – a time when islanders let their hair down and seriously party. And it’s become even more so over the last few years, with the influx of South Americans, who now make up a substantial part of the population, and who have brought their spin to the way we do things.
Last week we had the biggest of them all – Arrecife. The week there starts with a drag queen contest and basically has some kind of procession or activity every night of the week. The whole thing culminates in a huge procession, with murga bands playing drums, and a ceremonial burning of a giant sardine on the beach. Arrecife carnival is brought to an end with a full firework display on El Reducto beach.
Puerto del Carmen always has a huge parade, and that one took place over the weekend, with a procession all along The Strip there. Many tourists get stuck into the party atmosphere, dress up and join in with a float. Others watch and take photos.
This week it’s the turn of Haria in the far north and Playa Blanca in the far south, and it all finishes up with Costa Teguise on the 26th.
Costumes are never a problem, as the shops here start selling costumes months before the big event. For a few Euros, you can buy a full kit that may or may not last the night!
