Kerman, who owns and runs the well known tapas bars Repikada and La Pikada in Costa Teguise is expanding his empire to include Playa Honda. He’s taken over the old O’Pote restaurant on the main road going towards Deiland.
The new Repikada opens today, and will offer good food at low prices – including pinchos and various tapas dishes.

We love the annual “Ruta de Tapas” which takes place in Costa Teguise every year. Organised by the town hall, it’s a celebration of Spain’s most famous eating style.
A dozen or so bars and restaurants in the town have got together to offer a drink and a tapa (a small dish of their speciality dish) for just €2.50 per person. Last year we enjoyed beer, wine and cider and some fabulous dishes including albondigas (meatballs) boquerones (small pickled fish) and papas bravas.

Rafael Bocskai and Vance Richards moved to Lanzarote in November 2009. Prior to Lanzarote Vance was working for the NHS and Rafael at the Intercontinental Hotels Group. Disillusioned with living in London and looking for something different they made the decision to move abroad, after visiting both islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote they settled on the area of Playa Blanca for their new home.
Rafael’s cousin had introduced the couple to a traditional cake from Transylvania locally known as Kurtos Kalacs which translates to chimney cakes due to their shape – these cakes can be cooked over charcoal as well as in an oven and so the volcano cake and their new business venture Pastel Volcano was created. The volcano cake is an old traditional recipe that has been revived and is currently big in the States, made from a pastry dough with yeast these cakes are spectacular to watch being made and their smell is irresistible when just baked.

The volcano cake dough is prepared and then coated in caramel and rolled in a choice of toppings of cinnamon, hazelnut, mixed nuts, vanilla, coconut or sesame seeds. Traditionally the cake is eaten fresh hot or cold the same day, simply tear a strip off and enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea. The cake is versatile too, it can be cut into rings and filled with cream, ice cream, mousse etc to create a special dessert.
The guys have been working really hard to promote their volcano cakes in Lanzarote, they are now available in various cafés, hotels and restaurants around the island. If you’d like to try one of their volcano cakes or have an outlet you can distribute them from please contact Rafael and Vance by email at pastelvolcano@gmail.com or connect with them on Facebook.

Javier and Stuart always dreamed of opening their own restaurant and didn’t hesitate when they found that La Puerta Verde was for sale in Haría. Three weeks later in September 2009 their dream came true when they collected the keys from Thomas the previous owner.

Before Haría, Stuart worked at the Tapas Tree in Puerto del Carmen, the couple were no strangers to the North of the island heading for the tiny village of Ye at the weekends.
Since taking over the restaurant they have had some fun events such as Halloween when they decorated the bar and handed out bags of sweets and Carnival when a bus load of customers in fancy dress costume travelled over from Tías. There are plans for a Eurovision night and a TV outside for the world cup matches.
For those of you who knew the restaurant before you’ll be pleased to know that the popular special of the Gambas Asiático / Asian style prawns are still on the menu, Thomas left the recipe of his specialty with the restaurant!
The other really good news is that the opening hours have been extended to 6 days per week:
Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday 11:00 – 22:00 (last food order 9pm)
Wednesday 15:00 – 22:00
La Puerta Verde is easy to find, situated on the main road of Calle Fajardo with off road parking. The boys are gradually adding their own menu items, there is still a specials board, tapas and main menu and Stuart’s mum makes some fabulous puddings. The new favourite dish is the Pollo de Tandoori / Tandoori Chicken salad with mint yoghurt dressing.
Stuart told us that during June they are going to take a week off and the restaurant will be redecorated including the missing green doors. Javier has cleared a plot at the rear of the restaurant and will be growing their own vegetables in the future.
You can find more information about the La Puerta Verde Restaurante on their website Puerta Verde with the menu, drinks and photo albums.

Marc Nixon and Sandy Aitchison moved to Lanzarote six months ago with the help of Estupendo and opened their café bar La Perla Rosa in the prestigious marina Puerto Calero. Although fairly new to Lanzarote they are no strangers to Spain having previously lived in Gran Canaria for ten years and spent time on the mainland too.
The couple moved to Lanzarote for a quieter pace of life after living each day to the full for the past twenty years. Back in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria Marc & Sandy owned a bar restaurant with evening drag shows and fondly remember those years when tourists used to eat out every evening, before self catering and all inclusive options were introduced.
After leaving Gran Canaria they moved back to Scotland where Sandy hails from and opened a hotel in Fort William, business was good but it was missing something, the boys then moved to a restaurant in Stirling again something was still afoot and it finally dawned on them - it was the difference of living in the UK! Recognising the missing ingredient they jetted off back to the sunshine but this time to the mainland of Spain, where they ran a restaurant until they took a year out and decided the Canary Islands was the place for them, they just had to decide which one! Marc fancied Fuerteventura as they had holidayed there and Sandy preferred Lanzarote (thanks Sandy!).
Marc is the trained chef and there are some truly mouthwatering options on offer with a selection of breakfasts, cakes, pastries, light lunches and tapas. I was very tempted by the English Afternoon Tea including pot of tea, salmon and cucumber sandwiches followed by homemade scones with jam and cream, but then there was such a diverse menu including hot and spicy tapas, fresh salads, delicious quiche, chocolate fudge cake, deep apple pie – the only solution is to keep returning until I’ve worked my way through the entire menu.
All food and drink is served by Sandy and the banter between the two of them and their customers is great. At the moment the café bar is open from 10am to 6pm but with summer time and warmer evenings just around the corner La Perla Rosa will be the perfect place for a sundowner or two. There is a free WiFi service for customers and a selection of indoor and outdoor seating with shade or sunshine available.
Café La Perla Rosa is also a place for networking, both Marc and Sandy know that the only gay bar advertised in Lanzarote is Black & White in Puerto del Carmen, but if you want a warm welcome and a slower pace of life you know where to head to! The guys have also kindly offered their premises for the first Intercambio in April, where Spanish and English locals will meet to exchange conversation and improve their foreign language skills.
Café La Perla Rosa…..¡Al Gusto!

There’s a special atmosphere at the restaurant Emmax owned by Max and Moritz and situated on the front in Playa Honda, everyone is welcome whether you’re just passing and saying hello, stopping for a drink to enjoy the fantastic sea view from the terrace or dining inside you can be assured of a warm welcome.
Emmax opened in April 2007 and is still constantly surprising its clients with their varied menu options, they are renowned for their Asian and Italian fusion cooking. Scanning the specials of the day whilst we were talking to Max we were tempted by lots of the dishes – I’ve not seen Tiburón al Curry (Shark Curry) before!
The restaurant is very busy especially at the weekend so we’d recommend that you book to avoid disappointment, for more information and contact details please see their website Restaurante Emmax.
